Generosity
Tom McDade

Dan was generous some said
to a fault in praise of others
and with tangibles too.
He loved shipping
grapefruit, oranges,
and key lime cookies
nationwide, boxes certain
to be stamped "Priority."
In the bars and restaurants
he was renowned for buying
strangers drinks,
pouncing on checks
and wildly over tipping,
with a smile fit
for three faces.
He didn't wallet cash,
kept it pocket ready.
Aware of his largess,
I wondered if he'd filled out
an organ donor card.
But gifting himself
with the deluxe
peace via garage
and exhaust,
heart and lung
recycling fizzled
in two weeks
of generousto-
a-fault
Sunshine
State heat.
